FCC Speed Test

  • v3.1.4698

Measure your mobile broadband performance ad-free with the FCC Speed Test app!

FCC Speed Test latest version

What it does:

Accurately measure the performance of your mobile broadband service by running active tests to evaluate the following metrics - download and upload speed, latency, jitter and packet loss.

You can run these tests over both Wi-Fi and cellular connections.

The data from these tests contribute to the FCC’s Measuring Broadband America program. The program is run by the FCC to fulfil its Congressional mandate to collect and make publicly available accurate and transparent performance metrics on US broadband.

Your privacy is completely safeguarded. No personally identifiable information is collected.

How it works:

Once you install and open the app periodic automatic background tests will be scheduled, testing download, upload, latency, jitter and packet loss.

You can set a monthly data cap to ensure tests do not go over your limit. You can also monitor data usage in the app so you do not exceed monthly allowances by your carrier.

You can also run manual tests whenever you’d like and control which tests you’d like to perform.

Using the built-in GUI, It’s easy to compare tests and historical data collected to see how performance changes over time, or according to Wi-Fi/cellular connection.

In addition to the test-generated in-app information, you can also export additional data collected during a test. This passive data such as Cell ID, Signal Strength and GPS location can be used to further analyze performance across time and locations.

About the App

As part of the Measuring Broadband America Program The FCC Speed Test App assists with improving the visibility, accuracy and transparency of performance data on US mobile broadband.

What others say about the FCC Speed Test app

Where have you been all my life? I love doing speed tests regularly to verify if I'm getting advertised speeds from my carriers. I'm glad the FCC is collecting objective data and hopefully they can use this to further improve our mobile experiences. I travel often and do speed tests wherever I have my mobile devices: work, school, on the road, libraries, theme parks, hotels, fishing piers, stores/malls, toilets, EVERYWHERE. Was a bit worried that this app would be continuously collecting tests in the background but found under settings that you can turn off this automatic feature. Also, love the fact that you can limit the mobile data cap AND view how much data the app has used. Great features that I think Ookla should incorporate in their ad-generated app (BTW even if you pay to hide the ads, nothing special unlocks!) This app will be used in conjunction with Ookla's Speedtest whenever I want to run a test. Best thing about this app: ad-free! Although I'd gladly pay to support FCC's efforts. Suggestion for improvement: somehow incorporate a login/username/account feature so we can run speed tests on multiple devices and have everything stored on one account? Thanks FCC!
Kudos to the FCC for taking this on and making the aggregated data public. Only quibble is that the Average Results display should break out wi-fi and cellular data runs. Be sure to choose the right settings if you have a bandwidth limit, or don't want to be a perpetual FCC field test station. It defaults to using up to 100 MB per calendar month and wakes up your device to run tests in background.
I originally gave this only one star because it appeared to measure wifi as cellular. I contacted the developer, and they assured me that on the back end they are distinguishing between the two. I was also informed later that there was an update and now you can chose to show the average for wifi, cellular, or both by clicking the top, which is a drop down button. Very responsive developer!
Hopefully these results help the FCC realize that our carriers are scamming us and force them to drop prices and improve their networks. Also TWC max speed I get is 300megs but the test says I'm only getting 3 megs. Twc is a huge scam
